How Health & Wellness Has Impacted My Entrepreneurial Journey

By Brit Carmichael

When you start down the path as an entrepreneur, you are sending a loud and clear signal to the universe that says, “Hey, I have a desire inside of me that is burning and I MUST take control and create [insert your desire here] for the world!”

What you might not realize is that YOU are choosing to tap into the personal power that each and every one of us has within. When that fire is activated, you feel like you’re jumping on a rocket ship to the moon with no seat belt! Seriously, the deep burning desire within can be unstoppable without taking a step back to reign it all in.

The entrepreneur mind says: GO! GO! GO! and that’s GREAT when you’re starting a self-made business and your creative juices are flowing and you can’t help but want to keep creating MORE & MORE content/services for your tribe. It can be a never-ending creative spiral. That’s how I KNOW health + wellness play a MAJOR role in being a successful entrepreneur.

Just as we are taking control of our business life, schedule, income, and creative outlet into the world - we MUST take control of our physical + mental well-being. Not only should we take control of our health, but we MUST make it a priority.

“The first wealth is health.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

When I started my journey to becoming a successful hairstylist (my first shot at entrepreneurship) I stepped on the scale at 200lbs and I was NOT happy about it. I mean, I’m in the beauty biz for crying out loud. Our look = our credibility. Right?

I walked out of beauty school knowing it was NOT in the cards for me to work under anyone else, so I stepped straight into renting my own salon suite. By taking serious action + a huge leap of faith I began my entrepreneurial journey. As I began to realize the personal power I was cultivating in myself by following my heart, I started to notice that all the other “challenges or problems” I had were up to me to solve. Responsibility.

It takes that SAME kind of confidence + courage you have taken to run your own business and create your dream life to master ANYTHING else in life.

“You can’t master your situations, but you can master yourself.” - Brittney Carmichael

I knew if I had the guts to say NO to “the man” and work for myself, I must be able to take charge in other areas of my life. Right? Totally.

Thus began my inward journey of creating healthy habits in my lifestyle. I started with reevaluating where my time went during the 24 hours we are ALL given. I mean in the beginning, it was EAT - SLEEP & BREATHE how to build a successful biz! (You know what I’m talking about!!) Never was there a thought of “Oh hey, how do I feel today?” Check in with yourself. Start each day off with a little YOU time and start creating healthy habits that lead you to a life you love. Balance is the key to all things in life and balance is created by repetition.

It didn’t happen overnight, but by taking small steps each day + clarity of what actions were serving my highest good, I was able to shed 70lbs!! Knowing that you can take control of your internal states, habits, and actions is powerful (think Dorothy + sparkly red shoes!) You have the power to choose anything you want for yourself. It’s a matter of DECIDING what’s most important for you and your success.

Here is a simple 4 step take care of YOU formula to kickstart your day off with good vibes + success that I’ve adopted from Noah Kagan.

G - Gratitude
E - Exercise
B - Breakfast
Y - You

1. Start each morning with a grateful heart. List 10+ things that you feel most grateful for each day followed by any other journaling you might want to get out of your mind and onto paper.

2. Move your body!! Get your energy flowing. Bless the beautiful vehicle you were given by showing it a little love. Do some yoga, go for a walk outside, run, lift weights, play with your dog, stretch, or do cartwheels like a crazy kid. (Trust me on the last one!)

3. Eat Clean. I cringe when I hear fast-paced ‘preneurs say they don’t eat breakfast. Your body needs fuel. Preferably whole, healthy,  plant-based fuel to really give your body the boost of energy it needs to accomplish everything you’re dreaming of. Try a green juice. A piece of fruit + nuts. Drink a protein shake or have a smoothie. For a fuller meal try a little quinoa oatmeal.

4. You time. You DESERVE it. Remember, the more you have - the more you have to give. My me time includes various activities (depending on what my soul needs that day - remember to CHECK IN WITH YOURSELF) Try 15 minutes of meditation. Go outside. Call a friend to catch up. Go shopping. :) Whatever it is YOU need most to bring bliss into your life. Do that.

I know you already have the passion + drive that it takes to create amazing things. You wouldn’t jump off the entrepreneur deep end (head first) if you didn’t have what it takes! Just as you use clarity + choice in creating your dream biz life, you can apply these same principles in your daily life so you can thrive inside & out!

How to go from beginner to pro on your social media

By Catherine Geller

“Social media is a waste of time. It takes away from living in the moment.”

I’ve heard so many fellow entrepreneurs say this and while I do empathize with this valid point, I strongly believe that if used “correctly”, social media can greatly elevate your business brand and media message. Well-written posts will not only help you maintain relations with loyal clientele, but also they will simultaneously expand your reach.

Of course there are those people who spend hours editing, filtering, and trying to get the perfect angle of them sipping their margaritas on a classy rooftop bar. Believe me, I've done it one too many times; I spent countless hours trying to get the artsiest shot and writing the wittiest caption, until I realized that doing just that was in total opposition to what I was selling through my business.

If you’re wondering why, it is because my entire brand is a movement that aims to encourage people to be more real and to embrace their flawed, fabulous selves. Maybe this isn’t the case for you. Maybe you’re wondering why some of your posts get more attention than others? Maybe it’s the simple question of, how can I use social media to grow my business? It sounds pretty cliche, but the answer to these questions is a lot simpler than you would imagine. The key to successful posts on social media is to know who you are, what makes you/your product special, and to own those unique qualities, unapologetically.

The moment someone clicks on your Instagram feed, they must immediately know who you are. If your posts are not consistent, you will confuse your audience. Think about it. What if one day I put up a picture about the power of positivity and the next day I posted something that said, “I don't believe in positive thinking.” I know this is a little bit extreme of an example, but you get my point, right? Each part of the storytelling has to be congruent. Take a moment to look at your feed. Are your pictures brightly lit and evoking serenity? Does your brand feel like a breath of fresh air? Or are you more in your face, bold, sassy, and loud? Is your product more of a chic and classy Upper East Side, or more of a hip and chill Williamsburg?

As a life coach in NYC, I struggled with answering these questions. The people posting in my field all had seemingly perfect posts soaking up the sun on a sandy beach, meditating on the all too perfect green cut grass, and laughing in their bright colored shirts with a fresh juice in hand.

For a while, to keep it real with you, I mimicked them because their posts were popular and getting a lot of attention. My thought process was as follows; I’m a life coach, so I too, need to look like my life is bright, happy, and “together.” I did this for a while and felt guilty every single time I clicked the “post” button because deep down, I knew I wasn’t truly utilizing my own voice.

I couldn’t live with feeling guilty for posting on social media, so I sat in solitude, unplugged, and got honest with myself. I said, “Catherine, it’s not about being a second rate version of someone else. You’ve got to be yourself, even if it’s not what others “expect.” By that, I mean, I’m the person that embraces realness.

I’m not the life coach that eats a sugar free diet and sits in meditation all day. Yes, I have cut out sugar before and to be honest, it may have done blind wonders for my health, but I felt emotionally miserable. Sure, I meditate daily and I live a relatively healthy lifestyle, but I also embrace the other side of me that craves going out for ice cream and socializing over “fatty foods” with friends. I want people to look at my lifestyle and feel at ease when they see that I love indulging, too, that I feel awkward too, and that I most definitely lose on hard days, too.

I will never forget the day that one of my best friends turned to me and said, “Catherine, I follow social media accounts that have the perfect yoga poses and crispy kale chips, but that’s not the entire package of who you are. You have a whole other side of you that truly radiates perfection for being so imperfect.”

What I’m learning is that you need to know who you are and when you’re so clear on that, you posts will flow effortlessly, naturally attracting the attention of the followers who need your unique voice.

You must LOVE your product. Yes, that especially means yourself if you’re selling yourself as a coach, mentor, teacher, etc. Remember that no one likes a person or company that does not practice what he/she/they preach. If you are encouraging others to embrace flaws, be sure to include posts with your own positive self-image regardless of how “awful” you believe you look. I had to call myself out for playing small by not posting that many pictures of myself for fear of “not looking good” in them. It was just another way for me to get away with hiding from my spotlight, which is the opposite of what I am looking to do.

Last but certainly not least, you must truly believe in the value of your product. I have learned my worth as a coach by working with clients and realizing over time that I was giving them a priceless gift: the Sparknotes version of the wisdom I gathered over many years overtaken by angst, suffering, and soul searching. Without having the key tools to combat our antagonizing inner critics, we quite honestly won’t have the courage to step outside of our comfort zone. And ladies and gentlemen, that zone is where all the magic happens. When you are confident with your product, you feel confident posting shamelessly about it, and your clients feel confident joining your mission.

So what’s the key to long lasting social media success? I summed up my key points for you in an acronym: ACE. Authenticity. Consistency. Enthusiasm. Whenever you are posting, ask yourself, “Did I ace this post?” Good luck!

Are you listening to your inner voice?

By Cheryl Paige

It was a few years ago when I was hit smack in the side of the head with the realisation that I couldn't hear myself. I didn't know what I thought, what I wanted, or what I needed. I had let other's thoughts and opinion, desires and needs outweigh my own. It was sad, but true; I had completely lost touch with and silenced my inner voice.

In order to start to hear and then to listen to my inner voice I had to make some changes. It was a process and it's now something I do every day so I never find myself without access to this invaluable guidance. Here it is for you to try.

1) Recognize The Need for Silence and Stillness in Your Life

"The answers to all my questions lie within me."

The fact is that you, and only you, know what is best for you. We often lose sight of this and turn to others to tell us what is best for us, what they think we should do, if what we believe is ok, and if they agree with what we want.

If you are in a state, like I was, of depending on other people to guide you, you may start to feel resentful and controlled. It's ok to ask for advice, but ensure that you are giving yourself the room and the time to get clear about what you think and need.

You can do this by getting still and quiet.

Find a quiet place where you can just be still. Give yourself time to quiet your mind. It's essential to get out of your head and move into your body.

Take a breath in and allow it to move through your body. As you continue to breathe pay attention to what is going on in your body. What feelings are coming up? What sensations are you having?

Once you have relaxed and your mind has slowed down, ask yourself the question that you are contemplating.

Now listen for the answers. They will come.

2) Pay Attention to Your Instincts

Instincts are your inner voice speaking to you. They sound like "humm."  They feel like the hair that stands up on the back of your neck, or the gut feeling you get when you just know. They are the red flags you see, but too often ignore.

You don't need to intellectually understand. You need to get out of your head, start listening to your instincts, and start to trust them. Stop silencing them. They are how you speak to yourself and often you can't explain why. You don't need to explain why.

Begin to pay attention to your instincts and take time to contemplate what the message may be. Ask yourself, "what is whispering to you right now?" "What is the message I am meant to receive?"

3) Be Authentic & Speak Your Truth

Now that you can hear your inner voice again, it is time to start to take those masks off and to show up authentically as you. Let everything that you are whole heartedly shine brightly: all of your strengths, quirks, uniqueness, beliefs, and fears. It is now time to show up as you and speak your truth- even if your voice shakes. It is a lot less exhausting then pretending to be someone you aren't while silencing your inner voice.

This will push you out of your comfort zone, but in the end you will feel amazing because you are being true to yourself. I invite you to begin to implement this process into your life and watch as your inner voice begins to show you exactly what you need.

Beaming you light, love & happiness!

Yana Puaca Of NoMad Luxuries // Behind The Blog Scene

It never ceases to amaze me the learning lessons that can be found when you reach out and connect with strangers. A lot of the interviews I've been lucky enough to conduct this year are the result of my trip overseas to Alt Summit, where I connected with strangers that soon became friends, with contacts online that shared similar passions and whom at the end of the day share a love of blogging that knows no global boundaries.

That's why I'm so glad to have Yana from NoMad Luxuries on the blog today. Despite blogging from an entirely different continent, she and I share a love for flea markets, travel and chocolate with sea salt - it's the small things in life that matter right?  Beyond that she has worked with some of the top lifestyle sites in the US, but began her blog just like you and I - as a creative outlet. Enjoy her refreshing advice and don't forget to bookmark her blog when you're feeling in need of a wanderlust fix....

Describe your blog in 3 words…
Global, luxurious and sophisticated
What is your blogging manifesto?
NoMad Luxuries is a lifestyle blog for the woman who wants to create and live a beautiful and inspired life. Started in 2010, NoMad Luxuries has evolved into much more: a place where women can focus on the details that bring a global flavor to life. Beautifully-inspired interiors, trendy fashion and worldly-dishes add a stamp to your virtual passport. A source of inspiration for creating a well-styled life.
Top 3 blogging essentials?
My Canon, my laptop and good tunes. Chocolate doesn’t hurt either.
My biggest blogging moment/milestone was....
When you’re first starting out, everything seems to be a big deal since it’s a first. Up to this a point it’s been such an amazing experience collaborating with Home Depot, The Everygirl and joining as a contributor to the Style Me Pretty network. I’m looking forward to a lot more firsts!
Best piece of advice I've been given?
Be persistent. Eventually the universe will get the message and work with you to make things happen. Also, sometimes the wrong train will get you to the right station. So, don’t be afraid to take risks!
I'm dreaming about traveling to...
India. We’re hoping to make it happen this year- I’m so intrigued by the exotic and vibrant culture.
Best piece of advice to a newbie blogger?
Find your own voice and style. There are so many amazing blogs out there that it’s so easy to get caught up in what everyone else is doing. You need to find a way to tune out the other voices and find your own niche. Once you do, readers and brands will notice.
If I wasn't blogging I'd be...
Curating and buying for my own boutique. Oh wait…
Behind the scenes of my blog looks like...
While there’s no typical day in the life of blogging, most days involve emails, brainstorming and planning, writing, shooting with my amazing photographer, Jennifer Coffey, and tons of food. I’m always eating.
This year I'm most excited about...
Opening up my first storefront of vintage furniture and homewares. This has been a dream of mine for quite some time and I’m so excited to finally be able to share it with the world.
