I have to admit that I was humbled by the response to last week's honest post about the not so perfect or pretty world of blogging. I'm so glad that I wasn't alone in my frustration or that I'm not the only one that sometimes struggles to find that draw towards the keyboard. I can't stress how important it is to draw back the curtain here and allow ourselves to enjoy the blogging journey for what it is - a wonderfully chaotic, rewarding roller coaster of ups and downs.
And most importantly I'm so, so grateful you're here and along for the ride. This week in particular I've thought a lot about the power of community and how growing my tribe has happened slowly, in just the way I had hoped, in order to provide a platform of support in which myself and others can flourish. Like all good things, building a true and heartfelt community does not happen overnight, but I can shed some light on how best to get started. I've been asked this question many times recently and while the true subject of building community deserves a much larger and in-depth discussion I always circle back to the #1 way to grow your blog tribe: ask the question.
Yes, that simple act - of asking - will open doors. Put the question out there, pose an invitation and begin to slowly build that momentum of courage. There is a section of the book Nasty Girl by Sophia Amoruso that backs my theory up and really hit home for me. She writes:
“If you’re frustrated because you’re not getting what you want, stop for a second: Have you actually flat-out asked for it? If you haven’t, stop complaining. You can’t expect the world to read your mind. You have to put it out there, and sometimes putting it out there is as simple as just saying, “Hey, can I have that?”
Her point is spot on and I can speak from experience that in order to move things forward, to get started, just have to ask. Your tribe is out there, you just need to find them, and when you do don't stop there, invite them in.
