blogger interview

Kacee Geoffroy of Life With Lipstick On // Behind The Blog Scene

Despite living in different corners of the globe, I've come to recognise that the blogging world is a small one. Made up of men and women, all with different backgrounds, but a shared desire to tell a story and have their voice heard. I'm so happy to be bringing back one of my favourite series - Behind The Blog Scene, which is a interview series with bloggers around the globe, a chance to pull back the curtain on the sometimes confusing and glossed over world of blogging to reveal the real, honest and humorous side we all know and love.

Happy to be kicking things off with a blogger who always makes me smile, Kacee Geoffroy of Life With Lipstick On.  Kacee keeps it real and reminds me (always) that at the end of day, blogging is about having fun, pure and simple.

Describe your blog in 3 words...
Chic, simple, lipstick
What is your blogging manifesto?
Because life is a little more fabulous with lipstick on!
3 blogging essentials?
Wine, Pandora, Instagram
My biggest blogging moment...
Being recognized in public!  Talk about flattering!!
Best piece of advice I've been given?
Blog what interests you and don't worry about what everyone else is doing.  Keep it fun and your content will always be authentic.
I'm dreaming of traveling to...
I always love traveling with my hubby even if it's just a weekend getaway to Palm Springs.  Our family vacays are amazing but there is something so fun of wishing off with my love.  We get to recharge and revisit our dating years.
Best advice for to a newbie blogger?
Keep your blinders on!  No one can have the same unique perspective as you!
If I wasn't blogging I'd be...
I am hair and makeup artist and when I'm not blogging, I'm working with brides and dreaming up eye candy for photoshoots.
Behind the scenes of my blog looks like...
A messy desk, couple pieces of chocolate and wine!
This year I'm most excited about...
Jumping in feet first and exploring lots of new content. I am embracing video this year which has been new and completely embarrassing!   I am so excited to share my life and adventures with my readers and build exciting new partnerships with brands.

Behind The Blog Scene // Brittany Watson Jepsen from The House That Lars Built

House-that-Lars-Built.jpg

I'm having a big old pinch me moment with this week's interview.  The House That Lars Built has been a long time favourite, a bright and shiny blogging escape that led the way for many future DIY bloggers. I love how Brittany's path has been unconventional but she had the guts to follow her heart and I think that's a big lesson for me this week (and a timely reminder for many of you too I hope). If you are unfamiliar with her blog - brace yourself - and take some time to sit back and be impressed. It's visual, playful and captures the essence of what blogging is all about - having fun and making magic.  Go on and be inspired to create some of your own magic this week...

Describe your blog in 3 words…
Beautiful (hopefully!), whimsical, restrained
What is your blogging manifesto?
An artful life.  I have it right under my title because The House that Lars Built doesn't necessarily say "Here you will learn how to make projects for your life that add beautiful eye candy to your life."
Top 3 blogging essentials?
Patience, creativity, calendar!
My biggest blogging moment/milestone was....
Making a living from my blog. Nearly every day I'm still stunned at how we have food on the table from doing this!
My dream collaboration would be?
Oh wow. A collaboration with Tim Walker might nearly make me die. I'd just be happy to be on set with him as a fly on the wall.
Right now I'm listening to...
A Fine Frenzy's Now is the start. That is the theme song for this summer! The song screams happiness!
Best piece of advice to a newbie blogger?
Don't do it for what you think might be money. Do it because you want to add something valuable to the world.
If I wasn't blogging I'd be...
I have no idea. At an interior design firm? That's my background. Funny thing is, I tried so hard to get a 9-5 job and it just didn't work out. I was ready to play along, but I think someone had another plan for my life.
Behind the scenes of my blog looks like...
A mess. Seriously. My studio is a disaster.
In 2014 I'm most excited about...
Cleaning up my blog, getting a redesign, building my team, making magic!

Behind The Blog Scene // Ashley Rose of Sugar & Cloth

sugar-cloth.jpg

Some blogs just make you happy. They are bright, bold and visually addictive. They provide an escape, can cause party planning envy or this case offer up endless inspiration. Today we say hello to Ashley from Sugar & Cloth, a US blogger who I've watched for a while and who consistently crafts up Pinterest-worthy projects and visual delights that I'm in awe of.  One of the things that I most admire is the way she effortlessly partners with brands - something I think Australian bloggers are still struggling to do or at least in a way that works so organically - we can all learn something from Ashley's partnerships - and don't even get me started on her new studio (I'm SO jealous).  So grab a cup of tea and enjoy her interview below...

Describe your blog in 3 words…
DIY inspired living
What is your blogging manifesto?
From home decor to recipes and all of the pretty things in between, Sugar & Cloth is meant to be a resource for modern and bright DIY inspired living.
Top 3 blogging essentials?
Your own creative, original ideas, a DSLR camera, and spell check ;)
My biggest blogging moment/milestone was....
Getting contacted by Martha Stewart Living to style a Christmas shoot as my very first brand collaboration after almost a year of blogging. So surreal! Looking back on it I was an uniformed mess, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.
My dream collaboration would be?
HGTV! I would freak out, ha!
Right now I'm listening to...
Gungor, love them!
Best piece of advice to a newbie blogger?
Don't underestimate the amount of time you'll put into, but you'll reap what you sew.
If I wasn't blogging I'd be...
Probably working a 9-5 graphic design job, no thanks! ;)
Behind the scenes of my blog looks like..
Organized chaos, but some might beg to differ, haha.
In 2014 I'm most excited about...
The new Sugar & Cloth studio. It's the most exciting and terrifying thing I've ever committed to, but it's already been the most rewarding step I could've taken for my business.

Behind The Blog Scene // Gabriel Cabrera of The Artful Desperado

A unique perspective can sometimes be exactly what it takes to make a blog stand out and raise up above the clutter. Combine that with a true talent and eye for beautiful design and you've got the recipe for blog success which is exactly why so many people have fallen in love with The Artful Desperado (myself included).

Not only is Gabriel our first Canada-based blogger to be featured on Blog Society, he's also the first male blogger we've profiled and we love his fresh and honest outlook. His interview below provides some top advice including some hard hitting truth about getting away from your computer and really living in the moment....enjoy.

Describe your blog in 3 words…
Spicy Creative Hub
What is your blogging manifesto?
To truly embrace the art of living, that is with food, art, design, and everything else that makes your eyes water with joy.
Top 3 blogging essentials?
Camera, Photoshop, Sketchbook for post ideas (which come without notice!)
My biggest blogging moment/milestone was....
Traveling to Australia! I was invited as part of a group of North American bloggers to explore the Aussie culture. I just couldn't believe it when they sent me the invite! I kept running around in circles like a chihuahua chasing its tail, and thought to myself "I must be doing something right!". My dream collaboration would be?
An art and food photoshoot with Maggie Ruggiero and Theo Vamvounakis, the food stylist and prop stylist in residence of Gather Journal. Seriously, my chest bumps like a dryer with shoes in it just thinking of them.
Right now I'm listening to...
St. Lucia! Love their happy-colourful-dancey tunes. Perfect to get sh*t done while shaking booty.
Best piece of advice to a newbie blogger?
Get off your computer! (once your posts are done, obvs!). The best sources of inspiration are not on Pinterest, they're in restaurants, books, movies, parks, concerts, everywhere! As much as the internet is helpful, it will never compare to how much your senses can absorb from living the moment.
If I wasn't blogging I'd be...
Lost. Honestly, blogging has freed me from the fear of trying new things. It's been super rewarding to explore a bunch of different creative (uncharted) territories. Also, I'd probably be stuck in some kitchen eating all the goodies by myself. Like. No.
Behind the scenes of my blog looks like...
sharknado attack! As much as I'd like to say that I am an insanely organized blogger, I'm totally not. I do have ideas in a sketchbook and somewhat of an editorial calendar, but most things just happen very "spur of the moment". I am known for going to parties after a photoshoot with meringue smirred in my mustachio (hawt!), so things can get crazy. Crazy fun!
In 2014 I'm most excited about...
New creative projects for the summer! I find summer brings a huge wave of ideas that are just too good to pass, I already have a few lined up for food typography and lifestyle profiles. OH! also a new blog redesign which will strip down everything but the content, basically my online home is getting big renos. Woop woop!

Behind The Blog Scene // Melanie Blodgett of You Are My Fave

youaremyfave.jpg

I love meeting a blogger who doesn't take her work too seriously. That uses her blog to express her creativity and spread a bit of cheer to those of us who are less DIY inclined. This is why I keep coming back again and again to Melanie Blodgett's blog, You Are My Fave.

Melanie is a busy lady with a baby on the way, her work can be seen across the top US blogs and mags and she writes from a place this genuine, fun and often filled with tales of ice cream and come on, who doesn't love that? The blogging world can sometimes get a bit too serious for my liking so it's blogs like this that remind to me push the pressure aside and get back to basics - after all if you're not having fun blogging why do it at all? Thanks to Melanie (who makes crafting look easy) for sitting down to chat with us and sharing some advice she's picked up along the way...

Describe your blog in 3 words…
Projects, parties, cheer.
What is your blogging manifesto?
Work hard, be nice. And remember, it's just blogging.

Ben and Jerrys, where I got free ice cream for life.
Right now I'm listening to...
Happy by Pharrell, it's so dang catchy

A guest room bed piled with supplies.
