Kim Wardell of Design Life Kids // Behind The Blog Scene

When I first starting blogging personally in 2010 I did so to capture the beauty of the mundane. The often forgotten, boring moments that create our every day movements. In short I started blogging to find the beauty in the every day.

When I first found out that Kim Wardell of Design Life Kids had the same tag line for her shop I knew that I had to have her as a guest in our 'Behind The Blog Scene' series. This series is dedicated to women bloggers and business owners from around the globe, carving their own path. Women that inspire and prove without a doubt that anything is possible when you follow your heart.

Kim has taken a life-changing moment - the passing of her husband - to turn her grief into a family run business with the seal of approval from her two daughters. Her store and story are one to be admired and I am thrilled to have her inspiring words with us here today....

Modern, Design Minded, Raw
What is your blogging manifesto?
Have fun and only write about things YOU want to. Not every post has to be a happy one, but once you lose the love for what you do, then your blog loses it's magic.
Top 3 blogging essentials?
A dream, an iPhone and time.
My biggest blogging moment/milestone was....
There were two actually. 1: Sharing the loss of my husband. 2: When I announced that I was to transition from full time blogger to fulfilling a dream and opening shop DLK in Oct 2014.
Best piece of advice I've been given?
Cry when you want to, smile when you have to and find the beauty in the every day.
I'm dreaming about traveling to...
Sydney, Copenhagen, Japan, California, Korea... south of course.
Best piece of advice to a newbie blogger?
We eat with our eyes first. Whether it's food, decor, photography or fashion; it's very much the same. So keep your aesthetic bright and clean and eye catching, then you'll be able to bring in the reader.
If I wasn't blogging I'd be...
Running a store filled with my most favorite things... which is where I'm at now.
Behind the scenes of my blog looks like...
An office full of inventory boxes, crumbs from breakfast on the floor and two little babes running around happy as can be.
This year I'm most excited about...
Bringing on new lines and seeing where the shop goes! I'm also excited to start sharing more about what's going on in our life now and featuring new artists/designers from around the world on the blog.

Behind The Blog Scene // Erin Hiemstra of Apartment34

Erin Hiemstra from Apartment 34 is one of my favourite bloggers, hands down.

Yes I know I've got a lot of blog crushes but I've been reading Erin's blog for AGES and think that few bloggers today master original content in a way that is constant and always exceptional. She works hard for it, I know because she told me. Which makes me let out a little sigh of relief knowing that her honesty proves that quality content takes work - but hard work pays off and that's way Erin's blog is growing leaps and bounds and absolutely needs to be on your radar. Now.

I first reached out to Erin in 2012 when I submitted a post for her blog and miraculously got chosen. One memory that stuck out was how humble and down to earth she was. I continued to read her blog daily and when I saw that she was headed to Australia I jumped at the chance to finally get a chance to say hello in person.  I was able to hook her up with some local friends who showed her around Sydney, snapping up shots here and here of local hangouts and stores leading the way in design.

Before she had to head back to San Fran we caught up for coffee at Bills and just as I expected she was even lovelier in person. Smart, clever, humble and such a stunner in person, Erin is one of those bloggers who writes exactly how she acts in real life - full of energy, humor and sincerity. She's the real deal, a blog trailblazer and I'm thrilled to interview her here today...

Describe your blog in 3 words…
Sophisticated modern perspective
What is your blogging manifesto?
Also be changing. A lot of lip service is paid to being authentic in blogging, but who we are is always in flux so you have to find the perfect balance between building a unique voice and not becoming one note.
Top 3 blogging essentials?
Everything online, everything on your phone and everything out in the world. Sure I find reams of inspiration online (from Pinterest, to other blogs, tumblrs and online publications) and sure, you need the tools to share your ideas and run your business in the palm of your hand, but I get my best ideas and feel the most inspired when I look to the "real" world. Books, museums, travel, just the city streets. Creativity is all about uncovering seemingly disparate ideas and connecting the dots.
My biggest blogging moment/milestone was....
Fully investing in my site as part of my full time job. Taking the leap to build my brand and my business was scary, tiring and a new challenge everyday. And I couldn't be happier.
My dream collaboration would be?
I don't know that I could narrow it to one, but I have a fantasy with collaborating with a favorite retailer to curate a capsule "Apartment 34 collection." It could be housewares, fashion, accessories, art - all four?! I love unearthing finds - I'd love to work with someone to share things I'm passionate about in such a tangible way as commerce
Right now I'm listening to...
No matter how many Spotify stations I filp through I always come back to Two Door Cinema Club. It never fails to perk me up
Best piece of advice to a newbie blogger?
Come from a place of passion. I just read a great quote - "if you don't feel passionate, it's better not to do things." You're only going to drag yourself down by jumping into something you're not really committed to. We've all said the yes when we meant no a time or two...but try to avoid it at all costs!
If I wasn't blogging I'd be...
I've already had so many different careers...if I could pluck anything out of the air and be successful at it I'd love design bars and restaurants. I love bringing people together in beautiful spaces. Sadly I think that requires a degree I don't have so I'll just go eating in them instead.
Behind the scenes of my blog looks like...
A team of amazing people who help keep everything looking smooth on the service. No day is the same in blog land which is both a blessing and a curse. Blogging isn't the best path for anyone who requires consistency!
In 2014 I'm most excited about...
The unknown. New challenges are what keep you growing and thriving. Apartment 34 has taken such great strides in the past year - I can only image where we'll be by the time 2015 (did I really just type that!) rolls around!
