So many of us are busy taking care of business and taking care of others that we often allow our self-love and soul care be the third wheel in everyday life. There's no deliberation when we are on autopilot to get things done. I've learned that creating nurturing and nourishing self care and soul care rituals are essential to my survival. That sounds rather dramatic I know, but I don't want to just survive, I want to live, thrive and love large!
Today I'd like to share with you a few beautifully easy DIY rituals and recipes you can introduce into your daily or weekly routine. My rituals aim to honour and nurture your whole self with whatever time you have.
1. The number one practice that has brought me inner and outer peace, and literally takes seconds is breathwork. Take 3-5 deep belly breaths filling up your diaphragm, breathing through your nose. Hold for a few seconds, then gently and slowly breathing out through your nose. I do this several times a day - when I start my day, in the shower, on the way to my day job, at my day job in times of stress or tiredness, on my way home from work and as I lie in bed with my hands on my belly feeling the movement of my belly as I inhale and exhale. It is a beautifully simple and relaxing practice to incorporate into your daily routine. If I have more time, I also self-reiki (I'm 1st and 2nd degree attuned).
2. Meditation with crystals. I intuitively select crystals from my extensive collection, place them on and around my body as I lie in bed while listening to my favourite meditation tracks. As little as 10 minutes can bring about a complete change in feeling and perspective for your highest good.
3. Diffuse essential oils. I do this all day, every day when I am at home. I alternate my oil selection for peace and calm to energised and invigorated. My favourites are Wild Orange, Lavender, Frankincense or the Easy Air/Breathe blend from doTERRA.
4. Sage smudge your entire house and yourself. I light small bundles of sage over an abalone shell and waft the smoke around the house from outside the front door, through each room and finishing at the end of the house. This cleanses the space and is a short and sweet ritual to ground yourself in your surroundings.
5. Bathe. Immerse yourself in a lovely bath of essential oils and crystals. Create a sacred space by safely lighting beeswax or soy wax candles and placing them around your bathroom. Add some crystals to your bath tub (my picks are lithium quartz, clear quartz, amethyst, citrine and green aventurine). Follow the bath soak recipes below and treat yourself! To really nourish yourself, follow all of the above 4 steps and incorporate into your bathing ritual.
If you don't have a bath, you can still create a sacred shower space. Add some essential oils to your shower gel, body scrub or loofah, place a few crystals around the outer edges of your shower (so you don't step on them), and place 6-8 drops of your favourite essential oils onto the shower floor as the steam rises. My tip is to place the drops on the tops of your feet, then rub the bottom of your other foot on top. This is an effective way of inhaling the essential oils instead of it just washing down the drain.
Breathe Citrus-Mint Tea
1-2 drops doTERRA essential oils – peppermint and/or lemon
Pour warm-hot but not boiling water into your favourite cup. Add a drop or two of the oils. Stir. Hold your cup to your face, close your eyes and breathe gently – the peppermint is very invigorating!
Beautiful Bath Soak
1-2 cups Epsom salts
1 cup bicarb soda
1 handful Himalayan pink salt
5-10 drops doTERRA essential oils (Lavender and Frankincense are my favourites) – scent to your liking
You can make this in advance and store in a glass jar, but I prefer to make it fresh every time. This recipe is for one bath soak. I like to disperse the oil into the salts first before putting into the running bath water. You can also just put the salts in while the water is running, then when the bath is filled to your liking, add the drops then and swirl the water with your hand. The oils will sit on top of the water, take a few relaxing breaths as the benefits of the oils go straight to your skin. Immerse yourself for 20-30 mins. Make sure you have a glass of water or herbal tea by your side as you may feel a little warm! Enjoy!
Optional: While soaking I also like to apply a face mask. You can use any kind you like. I always add a drop of Frankincense or Lavender to mine and mix in the palm of my hand before applying. You could also use Tea Tree for problem skin.
Soothing Facial Oil Ritual
2 pumps Certified Organic Rosehip Oil
1 drop doTERRA Frankincense
After bathing or showering while skin is still damp, spritz face and neck with rosewater. Place 2 pumps of rosehip oil and one drop Frankincense to the palm of your hand. Rub hands together and apply to face and throat. Breathe in deeply.
- Invigorating/Energising – doTERRA Eucalyptus, Citrus Bliss, Elevation, Easy Air/Breathe essential oil
- Relaxing/Calming/Sleep - doTERRA Lavender or Balance, Serenity blends essential oil
- Soothing / Mood-lightening - doTERRA Frankincense, Clary Sage, Geranium or Ylang Ylang
