Behind The Blog Scene // Grace Bonney of Design*Sponge

I'm can't even begin to tell you how excited I am to introduce a brand new series today called Behind The Blog Scene.  As a blogger I haven an endless fascination with trying to understand the clever and talented women behind some of my favourite blogs.  When I first founded Blog Society I did so with the aim to bring the Australian blogging community together to help foster an atmosphere of support, community and encouragement. I hope that by bringing people together we can encourage and empower others around us by sharing our own experiences and learning from one another.

It was with this mindset that I set out to ask some of my favourite international bloggers to share the inner workings of their own blogs - the truthful, not so glamorous, sometimes humorous and honest side we don't often get to see.

I'm humbled (to say the least) to be able to interview my all time blog crush Grace Bonney from Design*Sponge below and as our first profile in the series.  Design*Sponge was the very first blog that I started reading and still do today. Grace has paved the way for bloggers and has continued to lead the industry while remaining one of the nicest and most down to earth people I've worked with. A huge thank you to Grace for her generous responses below...enjoy!

Describe your blog in 3 words…
I can't do three, but I can do one: inspiration. That's all I try to do every day. Inspire people to create spaces -and lives - that they love.
What is your blogging manifesto?
Put your best foot forward. That applies to both the way I work and the content we create and share.
Top 3 blogging essentials?
Laptop, iPhone, friends. The first two are obvious but the last one is the most essential. Without other people to talk to, run ideas by and be inspired by, I wouldn't be happy or inspired as often as I am.
My biggest blogging moment/milestone was....?
I used to measure these moments in years (the year we launched the scholarship, when our book came out, etc.), but these days it's more about being in the moment for me. Right now I'm most proud of running a business that's small, quick and nimble. Being able to support the people I work with and have stable jobs in a tough economy means a lot to me.
My dream collaboration would be?
I'd really, really love to work with Jenna Lyons. For a million reasons, she's someone I respect and learn a lot from as a business person and someone in the design and style industry.
Right now I'm listening to...?
Lorde on repeat. She's not normally the type of music I listen to (I prefer a fast song any day), but I can't get "Love Club" out of my head.
Best piece of advice to a newbie blogger?
Find a way to capture the essence of who you are and how you see the world and then spread out that voice onto multiple channels. Instagram, Youtube, blogs- whatever you do, find a way to distill it down to a relatable but recognizable aesthetic and voice and then let that voice live in a few different places so you're able to find readers all over the web. People don't read homepages like they used to- you have to reach out and find people where THEY are from the get-go.
If I wasn't blogging I'd be...
Running a dog daycare. I still seriously consider this. I'm happiest when I'm around animals. Behind the scenes of my blog looks like...
Something different every day. Some days we're on and off subways photographing artists' studios and shows we love and some days we're at home, working from our sofas. Then on my favorite days we're all gathered together watching a movie while we finish a huge DIY project or an entertaining story for the site. We always shoot those in one of our own homes. I love getting to work together in our homes- I think it lets us all appreciate each other's spaces and how welcoming they are.
In 2014 I'm most excited about...
Change. Embracing it, tackling it head on and letting it open me up creatively to new ideas and new ways of getting our ideas across.
